Movie Review: AKS (Hindi,2001)

Movie name: AKS (Hindi, 2001)
** Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpai, Nandita Das, RaveenaTandon
Director: Rakesh OmPrakash Mehra
Producer: AB Corp Ltd.

Story: Right from the days of Ramayana and Mahabharatha have the Indians seen the fight between good and bad (mythological happenings) that to date these are still held to great heights in their hearts. Add to this element a modern twist of a good police officer on trail of a dangerous serial killer on trail, you touch the surface of this movie's story line. But that is just not which binds the viewer's interest in the movie.

Manu Verma (Amitabh Bachchan) is a high ranked security officer in the Indian Government who is on a top secret assignment to protect one of the ministers on a foreign visit. He fails in his mission due to a secret dangerous killer whose spirit which he feels, but not before the minister confides in him about some of his crrupt accomplices
Soon the story shifts back to India, wherein ManuVerma is seen to be living with a happy family comprising of wife (brilliantly portrayed by Nandita Das) and daughter . Gulity of his inability to capture the killer, he soon starts his mission to capture one of the most dangerous killer hunt he would have ever imagined. His interrogation leads to his questioning of many people including Neeta (Raghavan's girlfriend), a bar dancer. The whole angle of Neeta eventhough initially does not seem to fit into the story , but surely it was added to show more of the evil side of Raghavan. Soon he gathers his team and his intelligence helps him to lead to the killer Raghavan (Manoj Bajpai) who is living in a cave of a jungle. The immediate sequence of engrossing battle between ManuVerma and Raghavan holds your interest and soon it feels like you are into another world with the various background mumblings, sometimes with quotes from Geetha by Raghavan. ManuVerma captures Raghavan and successfully proves his case leading to his trial and subsequent death sentence. The most engrossing sequence of the whole film was about to follow wherein the conversation between Manuverma and Raghavan gives you goose bumps about what is after all right and what is wrong? in this world. A confrontation between these two just before the hanging of Raghavan leads them to shooting each other. A twist in the tale, but neverthless what interest you is the story starts to justify all the mysterious antics of Raghavan one by one as you see ManuVerma coming alive with a dead body of Raghavan lying around. Soon it seems like happy memories for ManuVerma , before he soon realises that his soul has been overcome by the evil sould of Raghavan. All this seems to be more believable if the engrossing conversation between Manu Verma and Raghavan was rightly heard. Soon his mind and heart confronts the struggle between good and evil. Herein the story takes a slightly backturn wherein we see the issues of marital rape wherein Manuverma (now Raghavan) rapes his wife, ut neverthless this part is very much important leading to showcase the venerability of ManuVerma's mind and his constant struggle between good and bad . Again story comes back right in track as you see Manuverma(now Raghavan) starts killing all his earlier foes one by one using his power (being a police). Soon ManuVerma tries to override any distinct possibility of ManuVerma (the original) to get back his mind on a full moon day along with his long time grilfriend Neeta. What follows for the next 15 minutes leaves the viewer spell bound and I deeply suggest the viewer to get hold of this as you would have never witnesses a movie like this before on Indian screen.

Performances:
Amitabh Bachchan (aka Manu Verma): He was hailed as the angry young man of india in the 1970's, enitre nation idolising on him, but his films coming of after his revival in end of 90's after his sudden retirement in mid 80's did not prove his potential. Acting in this film during Mohhabbatein (2001) and KabhiKushie Kabhi Gham (2001) hugely popular films speaks of his judgement. This man leaves you spell bound , catch him on the big screen while he enacts evil epitomised sitting on a huge chair. He leaves you mesmerised with this deep baritone, haunting eyes and overall charishma which makes you believe how vunerable he is. One scene i would recommend is while you watch his ruthless gaze at Neeta in the interrogation scene in the first half. If ever Amitabh had to make a comeback again, I would prefer this movie over anyother. He travels on the two boats of good and evil with such ease that it looks like you are wathcing Manrlon Brando and AlPacino combined into one.

Manoj Bajpai(Raghavan) : Considering the minimum screen space he demanded he did a tremendous job. His voice looms over the entire movie and not until you watch the whole movie you can feel the impact of his whol actions. He certainly deserved a greater screen space but still he was hamming a bit in some scenes leading to his confrontation with Amitabh making him feel like a more like a mad person who is a killer rather tha a killer who has tinch of madness

Neeta (Raveena Tandon) : this defeinitely sounds one of her better roles. She dances wit such elegance and acts with such brutality , you can never imagine a better foil to Raghavan

Supriya Verma (Nandita Das): Again her role is limited but she leaves you spell bound with her struggle to help her vunerable husband and holding the family together.

Technical Departments:
Director: How many of you know that this film was the maiden venture of Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra who wnet on to create RANG DE BASANTI. This man leaves a mark on each and every scene. Never he compromises on song and dance drama and you will see the thwo most entertaining songs : Yeha zehreeli raat and Banda ee Binddaas Hai only when it is required. A tremendous talent to watch out for

Cinematography: Never has any movie before this in Indian Cinema had such a high visual effects and still left unrecognised. Kiran Deohans does a tremendous work which stands out easily as you watch the movie. His ability to keep each frame as dark as the theme of movie requires an applause.

Music: Music by Anumalik defintely rates among his best , be it each of the songs but also the haunting background score keeping the viewer engrossed

Finally, This movie was rather ahead of its time and was one of the main reasons making it a unsuccessful venture at the ticket window. But neverthless it stands out as one of the most highlt technically values film in recent times. Wtahc it for AMITABH the old man fighting for good and evil both.
** DROP ALL THE RULES and REGULATIONS , YOU WILL SEE EACH MANU VERMA BECOMING A RAGHAVAN**
