DALAPATHI-A loyal friend

I remember this movie to date even though it has been 16 years before i first viewed it when i was a child just 7 years of age. For me it was the movie which imbibed in me the interest to have more and more passion of watching movies. Every frame just captured my imagination, eventhough at the end of day i was just humming the song "chilkamma chittikeyanga". At that age i never knew who rajnikanth was, or who mammotty was or who Mani rathnam was. But now when i have recaptured the movie after 16 long years, this one movie stands out as a masterpiece of all Mani Rathnam's movies. I think i will be the only one who counts this movie as a masterpice compared to other movies of this illustrious film maker of India.
Let me first delve into the background of the movie and then say why i feel like that?(A famous scene from the movie wherein all three main characters come face to face and justify each one's actions)

Synopsis: Anyone who has known the hindus spiritual epic "Mahabharatha" would easily see the plot of the story in resemblance to the main characters of this epic story. Mahabharatha was mainly a story weaved on the fight between good and evil. Good being represented by the five brothers-Pandavas (Arjuna being the most talented and illustrious). Evil represented by Duryodhana and his brothers in association with his loyal friend "Karna". Simple it may sound, but how will one of the evil associates (Karna) react when they knew that he is none but the elder son of the mother of Pandavas(Kunti), who has abandoned him at birth for the sake of pride. Karna who was considered as the most talented, brave and generous of all the people in Mahabhartha had to test his loyalities when he came to know about this truth. Any feeble person would go and stand by his brothers (who were winning the war) after knowing this, but a loyal friend -NEVER. A simple story add to it the emotional element of ever tested mother son relationship, this epic never dies in minds of people who read it. Same is the case of DALAPATHI. Every character in this film seems to be so inspired from this epic, but never you will feel it until you start analysing the movie as a whole till the end. The role of Karna was being played by Rajnikanth(Surya being his character name: how ironic, as Surya being the other pseudo name of Karna in the epic). Duryodhana's role was brought forward and played fantastically by Mammotty(a national award winning actor), Arjuna's role being played by Arvind Swamy (his first film) and Kunti's role portrayed by Srividya. Even the most important character of Draupadi (wife of Arjuna ) and once favored by Karna was brought forward to the hilt. Only a genius could have handled the emotional drama with five such characters.

Plot: Srividya gives birth to a child as a single mother. Feared of social consequences she leaved him in a train, but repents her decision through out her remaining life of leaving an infant child of hers. This child grows up as Surya(Rajnikanth) after brought up by an old woman, and becomes a street goon always helping people. He kills one of the associates of Devraj (Mammotty) for doing wrong and gets himself arrested. Devraaj arranges for his release from jail and soon they become the best of friends. A friend being only a small term to define their relationship. They help people who come to them in solving their problems, albeit following he other side of te law. A new collector played by Arvind Swamy comes to the town and tries to stop them. But as it is revealed he turn out be the half brother of Surya, born to same mother. Now which side would Surya take once he knows this relation is the crux of the story.

Now comes the main point? What would have Duryodhana done if he knew that Karna was half brother of Pandavas. And what would have he done if he comes to notice that Karna never changed his loyalities even after knowing the truth. After watching this movie, however evil Duryodhana was I still reckon that he would have followed the same path as Devraj i.e submit himself and his kingdom in the name of his friend. Many movies may have depicted friendship, but NO movie, I say, no movie depicted the friendship and the value of loyalty in such a movie. For this only reason wherein the present world there is a void of such a friend or loyalty, I feel the desire to be the one or having one such friend like Surya.
